This weekend I got a job watering flowers for my friend who's family is going on vacation. Her mom is a huge gardener; her back and front yards are bursting with bright colors and flourishing blossoms covering every square inch. Nonetheless, I sort of figured this job would be like any other watering job, just turning on the hose and spending a couple minutes giving the plants a good drink. I was wrong. I went over there for a "tutortial" of sorts on Thursday, and ended up taking two pages worth of notes. Every type of flower required a sprinkle/shower/soak, or needed to be watered one/two/three times a day. "If you water each plant the right way, it should take about an hour" she said. And that it did. I expected it to be tedious work to give flowers such specific care, but it turned out to be enjoyable. It was nice to get to spend time in a neatly manicured lawn with not a yellow patch in sight, and to take a moment to appreciate the beautiul garden. Nothing died or wilted, so I think it turned out looking pretty good. Today was my last day, but I hope they'll ask me again the next time they go on vacation!
