In the most recent iteration of PC world, (which I have a subscription to) there was a short article on Windows 8, Microsoft's most recent planned operating system. I had previously read articles on it, and I wasn't impressed. This, however, was the last nail in the coffin (for me at least). It seems that (whether they intend to or not) Microsoft is about to screw every modder, maker, homebrew programmer, and gamer who's ever used Windows, and frankly I think it's going to be Vista all over again. I know for a fact a large part of the Windows userbase is made up of what I refer to as "advanced users". It's not an official term, but I think of anybody who uses their computer for more than the average functions as an advanced user. For these types of people, their computer is where they go to create things, have fun, or even put food on the table, and I think Windows 8 will restrict the advanced users' ability to do what they do efficiently and enjoyably. Windows is appealing to a certain group of people, and I don't think trying to be Apple or making PC's with a touchscreen interface is going to improve their sales or be pleasing to their market.
If you would like to formulate your own opinion, the article I read is here (I scanned the magazine, so don't tell anybody) : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h8k2v8ddtx3q71n/ogAjXl-wqq There are 7 pages, each image is one.
