Chilling in the Heat

Today I was playing badminton outside in the yard, when all of a sudden I started feeling like I was going to pass out. I sat down, but the sun just kept beating down on me. I couldn't escape the feeling of suffocating in the humidity. The only thing that finally made me feel better was sitting in my chilly basement, with a tall glass of ice water. Has anyone else been feeling like its just too hot outside?
I'm always wanting to do something outside in the summer, whether it be badminton, playing with Dusty in the yard, just sitting down and 'chilling', or maybe helping plant some flowers. But the only thing I feel like doing when I walk into the yard is either jumping into a bucket of ice, or running back inside to the safety of the air conditioner and a roof blocking out the hot sun.
This brings me to another thought I've had. Before I tell you, you have to know something about me: I HATE cold weather. I absolutely can't stand it. You need all your big snow gear, and layers of clothes, and hats and gloves and scarves and so on and so on, until you're suffocating under layers and layers and yes - more layers of clothing that might fit you, but tend to squeeze you when shoved over other layers of clothing. However, this summer, one thing has occurred to me. Cold just might be better than heat, technically speaking. In the winter, you can put more layers on to protect against the cold. If you're still cold, you can always just pile on more layers until you're warm. In the summer, you can put less layers on, or wear shorts and sleeveless tops, but if you're still hot you can't just peal away your skin. There is a point where there are no more layers of clothing left to peal off, and you can't go outside with no clothes on, so your only choice is to suffer the heat and hope you'll find shade soon, or stay inside and do things like have snacks, take naps, and have some more snacks (or maybe blog :P)!

Ahh, air conditioning- truly a gift from the gods. My children and I epitomize fair skin; putting on 50 spf sunscreen follows brushing our teeth in the morning. I once spent two weeks in the Bahamas on a yacht. No one believed me that I had been anywhere other than perhaps a dark closet. The sun is not kind to me, neither its rays nor its heat. Last summer my kids and I only came out in the evening unless we were slathered in sunscreen, wearing big floppy hats and sitting under beach umbrellas. We too hope for temperatures that are a little kinder, but this is Chicago, land of too too hot or too too cold. The temperate days are few and far between. When we get them we will embrace them and stay up around the clock. Otherwise, we too will hide away inside snacking. Maybe I'll have to set up a blog for the kids!

As you can see, Dusty helps with the pictures. :D Thanks for being so cute, Dusty! Also, don't get confused. Dusty had darker fur when she was little, but she was tan underneath! Nope, I don't have two dogs.

The pictures on the top of this page and on my homepage are pictures I took at the Botanic Gardens, and I thought they went well with this theme, so.... yep!
