It wasn't until last year that I stopped calling my mom to tell me how to hard boil eggs. For many years the ability to retain the process for hard boiling eggs escaped me. Did I put the eggs in after the water boiled or before? And exactly how long do they have to boil? I might be one of the only ones to write down the steps to hard boil an egg in a recipe book. I've conquered the egg-boiling-thing, but there are still some things I have to think long and hard about. For example, I have been cutting oranges ever since I was officially allowed to use a knife, yet I still have to stop and really think about which way to cut it to get wedges. I admit to having the same problem when it comes to grapefruit- when I don't want wedges.
And when it comes to numbers, it's just not going to happen. I will mix them up, reverse them or just completely forget them. I don't just mean hours later but immediately. Unless I write it down it's up for grabs.
It all makes me wonder how the brain works. Why do we remember some things so easily What makes that information stick?
I'm the person who walks out of a room, into another, and completely forgets what I was going in there for. I envision myself growing old with a little notebook in my pocket, just like my Opa, writing everything down.
I recently read an article that said people forget why they go into a room because of doorways. Seriously! It said that going through doorways affects the brain; as you enter a doorway your brain files away whatever you where doing and prepares to take in new information. Now, I don't really know how scientific or true that is, but I am am going to take full advantage of that article and hold doorways for my inability to cut oranges, without stopping and thinking exactly how to do it.
