I live in Chicago (for those of you reading this on blogger), and recently there's been a lot of controversial discussion. Illinois has had the strictest laws restricting firearms of any state in the country, and now, they've been declared unconstitutional. This means that gun laws must now be more lax, and at this point, it's anyone's guess what will happen next. I personally don't know, but I am a supporter of controlled carry laws. The argument against guns is that they will cause more shooting. However, I think the reverse is true. Gangs, Cartels, and other criminals will get guns regardless of their legality, and if law-abiding citizens are not able to carry weapons, the criminals can walk up to somebody and rob them. However, if criminals expect people to be carrying guns (or see a gun on somebody's hip), they'll think twice about robbing them. However, a large number of shootings are accidents caused by people who don't know what they're doing. That's why I think citizens should have to learn how to dissasemble, clean, reassemble, and safely carry their firearm before they are able to purchase it or get a gun license. Anyway, that's just my opinion, so feel free to debate in the comments.

I do agree about the mental health regulations for owning a firearm.

In gun shooting tradgedies, the NRA argues that if the victim had a gun, they could have defended themselves. Although that is true (if the victim is trained and licensed and knows how to use a gun, and had practice in shooting guns) that's completely beside the point. The whole thing could have been avoided if the attacker DIDN'T have a gun. It would be unconstitutional to say nobody can have guns, and it wouldn't make sense, but in my opinion there has to be stricter rules. It is argued that people will get guns illegally anyway, but in many situations attackers were licensed and legal gun owners. I find similarities in the argument over gun rights and marajuana legality. Yes, people get marajuana illegally, but I'm sure if it was legal more people would abuse it than do now. Besides, the people who really need it are getting it. Sorry for the super long comment I got kind of side-tracked.

i have to agree with Franko. It would be great if that guy over there could get a gun, and protect himself, but I see where Maura is coming from. Eventually we might take it for granted and get a little bored with the concept, leading to people messing around. This brings me back to Franko's point of making sure people know what their doing. I know my cousin is very much into guns and stuff like that (I myself do archery) and I can tell you that he knows what he is doing, and enjoys it in a safe environment. I would trust him to carry around a firearm because hes been trained.

The flaw is that if an insane person can get a gun, they can go nuts and take out everybody else with them. I also see the need for protecting ourselves, so i say just pistols.

Dave, why only pistols, they can be just as bad as any other gun. Please explain.
