Summer....It's just around the corner. Days with limitless possibilities. There are so many things I could do, and yet there are so many things I don't want to do! Days can be scheduled to the brim or left wide open ready to move life into the slow lane: sleeping late, long leisurely breakfasts with a crossword puzzle, curling up with a really good book or a completely mindless magazine, time to lay in a hammock looking at clouds and smelling the neighbor's freshly cut grass, trying out new recipes and hoping they turn out just as fabulous as they look. Ahh, summer vacation. When that first day of vacation starts it always seems like there is so much time ahead, but I know, from age and experience, that once July 4th hits I've reached the top of the hill and the days will start to roll downhill with increasing velocity. Well, I know this; the one thing I plan to do with this time is write. I have a beautiful red leather envelope and a journal from Florence. The envelope is a deep red; the color of secrets and passion. I have unwound its black suede cord to open it many times to drop in a note to be savored some day when I have time. It still smells new but it's beginning to show creases where I open and close it continuously, stuffing it full of scratch papers with story and essay ideas and rough drafts for that children's story I've been working on forever. I want to see that story finished and sent off to a publisher by summer's close. The journal is full of letters I've written to my children in stolen moments of freedom. There are lined pages waiting to be written upon; stories of their adventures and mishaps and of triumphs and foiled escape attempts. Finding time to write is at the top of my list for those lazy summer days that lie just around the corner.
